Arkxsite CompetitionForte de Vera Cruz | Figueira | Portugal
The intervention is based on the reinterpretation of the ancient fortress limits, allowing the visitor to understand the scattered ruins as a whole.
A perimetral route is drawn in the existing landscape as a sort of sacred enclosure to protect the site.
This path around the ruins integrate the existing pathways at different heights.
The promenade leads into to a light prism that emerges from the ground recovering the former height of the fortress.
A translucent space made of stacked glass elements and falling water, that contrast with the carbonated rock of Figueira.
This landmark invites the visitor towards an ascending walk where the babbling of water and the light flows into a space of vanished limits.
In this era where borders seems to be physically disappearing, individual solitude appears evident.

I know, I alone
How much it hurts, this heart
With no faith nor law
Nor melody nor thought.
Only I, only I
And none of this can I say
Because feeling is like the sky -
Seen, nothing in it to see.
Fernando Pessoa
