Granada | SpainThe value of the wall that surrounds the Carmen of San Cayetano, in the heart of the Albaicín Quarter, has left rich remains that once was a beautiful garden, obscured by a series of constructions which have gradually being attached to it. By recovering this former configuration as a valuable void facing the Alhambra, the intervention aims to regain the garden placed between the old stables and the porticoed gallery which represents the main construction within the Carmen. This way, by the implementation of a social programme, two volumes, two neutral architectures lie on the garden respecting the old wall to provide a new underground connection within the Carmen, now used as a service building for the elderly population.
The intervention, as a radical gesture applied to the Carmen, means, however, a light implementation, about its position and materials, letting the option of a possible future intervention.
The value of the boundary wall regains its identity by restoring its natural configuration to the Carmen, leaving the new use for the existing construction and thus creating a spatial tensión between the two new volumes. This movement brings back the importance to the old garden.
